When first getting into marketing through many business owners and in-house marketers tend to focus on the the wrong thing, instead of social media basics. While a cool Twitter handle or number of Facebook “likes” may be exciting, focusing on these type of goals isn’t that important. The key is to create meaningful content that causes interaction.

First things first, you need to get to know your customer base. This is key is business in general, let alone social media marketing. What are your customer’s needs? What are they looking for when using social media? What can I supply that will not only interest them, but engage them to interact? You’ll also need to set some goals. What do you want to achieve by using social media in your business? To sell of more products? Educating your audience on those products? Supply a community need? Show your church can guide a path to finding true spiritual salvation? These questions should define your approach to posting and content. For example: A craft store that wants to showcase items and supplies may use Pinterest or Instagram more than Facebook, while having no need for Twitter at all.

You have to start looking at it from the consumer’s point of view. There has to be a reason to follow you and your information. You need to feed meaningful content. To help with this add photos and stories to your postings. Share the great things from other sites and posts that you find when you’re use social media. Create a circle of awesome ideas that relate to your services and products. Just remember, don’t worry about how many followers you have. If done smart, building your audience will come naturally through inspiring content and engaging information.
